Roof Types by Country

Roof terminology is not defined its use various significantly from place to place and country to country. Roof types also vary so that the difference is easily discernible .below is a list of types of roofs used in different geographical areas:

• In the U.S.:

o Flat roof: also referred to as the parapet roof which means a roof with a wall around it. The creation and design of flat roofs is trivial .It is widely popular in the United states because the slab can be used for different functions they can be used in the illustration or placed backwards resulting to gutters .it also offers diversity since builders cannot use the same materials in making the flat roof as the materials used to make the rest of the building.

o The helm roof: the rhenish helm is a roof that has a square shape and four gable ends. This roof types is mostly used in the US towers. It works more effectively in square towers rather than odd-shaped towers. It is preferred because most corporations want to provide landing space for their helicopters.

• South America:

o Monitor roof; this consists of a monitor which is a raised structure that runs alongside the ridge of roofs that are double-pitched and has a separate roof that runs down parallel to the main roof of the building. The monitor does not have to run down the entire length the main roof. They are preferred by many factories, warehouses and big barns found in South America. South Americans preferred monitor roof types because of their high ventilation capabilities.

• In Africa:

o The gabble roof: This is also referred to as the peaked roof and looks like an inverted V. This roof type is common in African villages and is handy for small buildings and houses. These structures are approximately 6*10 meters. It is preferred in making African structure because it allows thick walls which saves usable space. These roofs integrate very well with village buildings.

o The other common used roof type in Africa is the shed roof .The shed roof types are sloped in one direction. It is hardly used in the main building being preferably used in parts of the building for. Where used as a main building’s roof, it will probably be used to make sheds, animal house or storage bars common structures in African villages.

o Thatched roof:
this is an ancient roofing style that is still being used in Africa. It uses materials like sedge, rushes, heather and reeds. They are preferred since they don’t have the ability to afford the other roof types and the materials used for making thatched roofs are naturally available.

• In the UK:

o Clerestory roof; a clerestory window is one that is located so high that you cannot see out of it but allows sunlight into the building. These roof types are very common in the UK since they try to maintain the traditional nature of building designs that have been there since historical times.

o Gambrel roofs are also very popular in the UK. They consist of more than two distinct roof pitches such as flat higher up, steep lower down and shallow. They are preferred because the pitches increase the usable volume below the roofs.

• In China:

o The architectural techniques used in china have remained unchanged for long. The most common type of roofing used in china is the Yingshan also referred, to as the hard mountain. They can use yingahsan :gable roof, wudian :hip roof, xieshan :which is a combination of gable and hip roofs. They use these roofs mostly as a form of tradition and culture.
